Key things to know in Denver
Your insurer cannot require you to use a particular repair shop. Colorado law bars insurers and their agents from requiring that repairs be made, or not made, by a specified repair business, from saying a shop choice could delay or block payment, and from pressuring or inducing you to use a particular shop (C.R.S. 10-4-120). The Colorado Division of Insurance says: 'you have the right to choose whichever repair shop you wish to use.' Source
An insurer may share information about its preferred shops and may guarantee their work, but the choice stays yours. It pays reasonable market costs and may not pay excessive fees a shop charges, such as excessive storage fees or labor rates. Source
Colorado's definition of a salvage vehicle specifically exempts a total loss caused by hail, so an insurer cannot require a salvage title before paying a hail total loss on that basis (C.R.S. 42-6-102(17)(a), per the Division of Insurance). Source
Colorado has no law setting a total-loss threshold. Each insurer decides when repair cost makes a vehicle a total loss, and pays the vehicle's actual cash value at the time of the loss. Source
If a second hailstorm damages your car before the first repair is done, the insurer assesses the new damage and pays for it less the first payment, and the comprehensive deductible applies to both losses. Source
How to choose a body shop in Denver
Most people pick a collision shop once every few years, usually in a hurry and often with an insurance adjuster suggesting one. A few minutes of checking before you hand over the keys is worth it, because the quality of a structural repair is hard to judge once the paint is on.
What the credentials on this page mean
I-CAR Gold Class is the recognition I-CAR, the collision industry's training organization, gives to shops whose technicians keep up ongoing training in their roles. Modern cars mix high-strength steels, aluminum and bonded panels, and repair methods change with every model year, so current training matters more in collision work than almost anywhere else in auto repair.
Carmaker certification means a manufacturer has certified that the shop has the tools, training and facilities its repair procedures call for. If you drive a newer vehicle from one of the brands a shop is certified for, that shop is set up to repair it to the carmaker's own instructions.
AAA Approved Auto Repair shops have been inspected by AAA and agreed to its service standards. BBB accreditation means the business has applied to the Better Business Bureau and committed to its standards for handling customers. We show accreditation only — never a letter grade.
Questions to ask before you authorise a repair
Will you follow the manufacturer's repair procedures? A good shop answers yes without hesitating and can tell you where it gets them.
What parts will you use? New original-equipment, aftermarket and recycled parts are all used in insurance repairs. Ask which ones your estimate lists, and why.
Does my car need a calibration afterwards? Bumpers, mirrors and windshields often carry cameras and radar for lane-keeping and automatic braking. After a repair those sensors may need to be recalibrated.
What does your warranty cover, and is it in writing? Many collision shops offer a warranty on workmanship and paint for as long as you own the vehicle. Ask what it excludes.
Can I see the damaged parts you replaced? It is a reasonable request, and a shop that keeps them for you is a shop that expects to be asked.
Hail damage
Hail damage to a car is covered under comprehensive coverage, not collision, and comprehensive coverage is typically written with a deductible. In Colorado, a car totaled by hail is not a salvage vehicle under state law. If a second storm hits before the first repair is done, the insurer pays for the new damage less what it already paid, and the deductible applies to both claims.
Your rights after a claim
In Colorado you choose the body shop. Your insurer can tell you about its preferred shops, but it cannot require you to use one or suggest that your claim will be delayed if you don't. The repair estimate must say whether each part is new OEM, new non-OEM, used, reconditioned or rebuilt, and the shop needs your consent before installing it.
How did you pick the best auto body and collision repair shops in Denver?
Every shop is scored on the same published credentials — I-CAR Gold Class, carmaker certifications, BBB accreditation and years in business — and ranked by total points. The full method is on our How We Rank page.

Do I have to use the body shop my insurance company recommends in Colorado?
Your insurer cannot require you to use a particular repair shop. Colorado law bars insurers and their agents from requiring that repairs be made, or not made, by a specified repair business, from saying a shop choice could delay or block payment, and from pressuring or inducing you to use a particular shop (C.R.S. 10-4-120). The Colorado Division of Insurance says: 'you have the right to choose whichever repair shop you wish to use.'
Will a hail total loss give my car a salvage title in Colorado?
Colorado's definition of a salvage vehicle specifically exempts a total loss caused by hail, so an insurer cannot require a salvage title before paying a hail total loss on that basis (C.R.S. 42-6-102(17)(a), per the Division of Insurance).
