Key things to know in San Antonio
Your insurer may not limit your coverage by restricting which repair shop you use, and when you claim against another driver's insurer, that insurer may not require you to use a particular shop (Texas Insurance Code §1952.301). Source
An insurer, its agents and adjusters may not tell you that you must use a specific shop or one on its preferred list for the repair to be covered, may not take referral fees for sending you to a shop, and may not make you travel an unreasonable distance to one (Texas Insurance Code §1952.302). San Antonio knows hail. On April 12, 2016, a storm dropped hail up to 4.5 inches across north San Antonio, about 3 miles southeast of Helotes (National Weather Service). Source
That storm caused an estimated $560 million in insured damage to vehicles alone, and more than 110,000 vehicles were hit (Insurance Journal). Source
How to choose a body shop in San Antonio
Most people pick a collision shop once every few years, usually in a hurry and often with an insurance adjuster suggesting one. A few minutes of checking before you hand over the keys is worth it, because the quality of a structural repair is hard to judge once the paint is on.
What the credentials on this page mean
I-CAR Gold Class is the recognition I-CAR, the collision industry's training organization, gives to shops whose technicians keep up ongoing training in their roles. Modern cars mix high-strength steels, aluminum and bonded panels, and repair methods change with every model year, so current training matters more in collision work than almost anywhere else in auto repair.
Carmaker certification means a manufacturer has certified that the shop has the tools, training and facilities its repair procedures call for. If you drive a newer vehicle from one of the brands a shop is certified for, that shop is set up to repair it to the carmaker's own instructions.
AAA Approved Auto Repair shops have been inspected by AAA and agreed to its service standards. BBB accreditation means the business has applied to the Better Business Bureau and committed to its standards for handling customers. We show accreditation only — never a letter grade.
Questions to ask before you authorise a repair
- Will you follow the manufacturer's repair procedures? A good shop answers yes without hesitating and can tell you where it gets them.
- What parts will you use? New original-equipment, aftermarket and recycled parts are all used in insurance repairs. Ask which ones your estimate lists, and why.
- Does my car need a calibration afterwards? Bumpers, mirrors and windshields often carry cameras and radar for lane-keeping and automatic braking. After a repair those sensors may need to be recalibrated.
- What does your warranty cover, and is it in writing? Many collision shops offer a warranty on workmanship and paint for as long as you own the vehicle. Ask what it excludes.
- Can I see the damaged parts you replaced? It is a reasonable request, and a shop that keeps them for you is a shop that expects to be asked.
Hail damage
Hail dents that haven't cracked the paint can often be fixed with paintless dent repair, where a technician pushes the metal back from behind the panel. That keeps the factory finish and is usually faster than refinishing. Deep dents, cracked paint and damaged glass still need conventional body work. After a big storm, out-of-town repair crews often set up in parking lots. A local shop with a fixed address will still be there if the repair needs attention later.
Your rights after a claim
In Texas, you choose who repairs your car, not the insurance company. You can ask any shop for its own estimate, and if the shop's estimate is higher than the adjuster's, the shop and insurer can work out the difference with a supplement once the car is taken apart. The statutes are summarised under Key things to know above, with links to the text.
