Key things to know in San Antonio
Bexar County starts requiring emissions inspections on November 1, 2026. Source
Gasoline vehicles (hybrids included) from 2 to 24 years old in the passenger weight class need a passing emissions test before they can renew registration in Bexar County. The test costs $18.50 and is done at official inspection stations, dealerships and repair shops. This makes Bexar the 18th Texas county with emissions testing. The EPA found that ground-level ozone in the county exceeds federal standards. Source
Diesel and electric vehicles do not need emissions inspections. Motorcycles and mopeds don't either, per TCEQ's statewide program rules. Source
No Texas statute requires a repair shop to give a written estimate or get a signature before it starts work. Repairs can be authorized orally. TexasLawHelp says outright: 'Texas has no laws that specifically apply to auto repair shops.' It still recommends getting a written authorization that lists the repairs, completion date, payment method, and itemized parts and labor. Source
Texas's Deceptive Trade Practices Act makes it unlawful for a shop to knowingly misstate what parts or repairs a car needs, or to charge for work that wasn't done (Texas Business & Commerce Code §17.46(b)(13) and (b)(22)). Source
How to choose an auto repair shop in San Antonio
A good independent shop is one you return to for years: for oil changes, brakes, the warning light that comes on at the worst moment, and the honest advice that a repair is not worth doing. The credentials on this page are a starting point. These are the things worth checking next.
What the credentials on this page mean
AAA Approved Auto Repair shops have been inspected by AAA, meet its standards for equipment, training and customer service, and agree to have AAA step in on a member's complaint. ASE Blue Seal of Excellence is the recognition the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence gives a shop where most of the technicians hold ASE certifications and every area of service the shop offers is covered by a certified technician.
Repair networks such as NAPA AutoCare are groups of independent shops that share a parts supplier and, usually, a warranty you can use at other member shops when you travel. A published warranty tells you how long the shop stands behind parts and labour. Longer is better, and in writing is essential. BBB accreditation means the business has committed to the Better Business Bureau's standards. We list accreditation only, never a letter grade.
Questions to ask before work starts
- Can I have the estimate in writing? Texas law doesn't require one (see Key things to know above), so ask for it, and ask the shop to call you before doing anything that isn't on it.
- Is the diagnostic fee applied to the repair? Many shops credit it if you go ahead. Know in advance.
- What is the warranty on this job? Parts and labour, how many months or miles, and whether it is honoured at other shops.
- Can I see or keep the old parts? A reasonable request that a good shop will be happy to agree to.
- Does my car need this now, or can it wait? A trustworthy shop will tell you which items are urgent and which can wait.
Inspections and emissions
Many San Antonio repair shops are also official Texas inspection stations, and from November 1, 2026 drivers registering most gasoline vehicles in Bexar County will need an emissions test as well. If your check-engine light is on, get it diagnosed before the inspection rather than after a failed test.
Independent shop or dealer?
For routine maintenance and most repairs, an independent shop can do the same work as a dealer, usually for less, and having it done elsewhere does not void your factory warranty, provided the work follows the carmaker's maintenance schedule and you keep the receipts. Recalls and repairs covered by the factory warranty are the exception: those are done free at a dealer.
